Organoclay Thickeners Rheology Modifiers

Organoclay Thickeners Rheology Modifiers

Bentogel BG4

Bentogel BG4 is a rheological additive, specifically an organoclay, used to modify the flow properties of paints, inks, and other coatings. It’s made from purified and modified bentonite clay (both Na- and Ca-bentonite) and offers excellent thickening and anti-settling properties in organic solvents. Bentogel BG4 is known for its high gel efficiency, good viscosity repeatability, and ability to prevent pigment settling.

Benefits:
  • Rheological Modifier: Bentogel BG4 is a thickener or rheology modifier, meaning it influences how a liquid flows and behaves under stress.
  • Solvent Compatibility:
It is designed for use in a wide range of organic solvents, including those with low to medium-high polarity.
  • Anti-Settling: A primary function is to prevent pigments and other solid particles from settling out of the liquid formulation during storage.
  • Thickening: It provides effective thickening, increasing the viscosity of the liquid and controlling its flow properties.
  • Thixotropy: Bentogel BG4 exhibits thixotropic behavior, meaning it becomes less viscous when stirred or agitated, and then thickens again when left at rest.
Properties:

It’s commonly used in industrial paints and printing inks, and can also be found in sealants, lubricating greases, and putty.

Bentogel BG6

Bentogel BG 6 is a rheological additive belonging to the Bentogel BG series. It’s produced from Na-bentonite and Ca-bentonite through purification and modification. This additive is designed for both solvent-based and water-based applications, particularly in low- to middle-polarity systems. It’s known for its high gel efficiency, good viscosity repeatability, and excellent thickening and anti-sediment properties in organic solvents.

Benefits:
  • Rheological Modifier: Bentogel BG 6 acts as a thickener and rheology modifier, influencing the flow and consistency of liquids.
  • Thixotropic Properties: It exhibits excellent thixotropy, meaning it thins under shear stress (like when stirred) and thickens when at rest, providing good sag resistance.
  • Solvent Compatibility: It’s suitable for a wide range of solvent polarities, making it versatile for various formulations.
Properties:

It’s used in transparent paints, printing inks, and other applications where controlling viscosity and preventing settling are important. It’s also mentioned in the context of lubricating greases, sealants, putties, cosmetics, and anti-corrosion paints.

Bentogel BG3

Bentogel BG3 is a rheological additive, specifically an organoclay, used to improve the properties of various materials, particularly in coatings, inks, and other applications. It’s made from modified bentonite clay (both Na-bentonite and Ca-bentonite) and is known for its ability to enhance thixotropy, prevent settling, and control viscosity. It’s effective in both solvent-based and water-based systems.

Benefits:
  • Rheological modification: Bentogel BG3 alters the flow properties of materials, providing desirable characteristics like thixotropy (shear-thinning behavior) and sag resistance.
  • Anti-settling: It helps prevent pigments and other solid particles from settling out of suspension, maintaining a uniform product.
  • Viscosity control: It can be used to adjust and stabilize the viscosity of formulations, ensuring proper application and performance.
  • Wide solvent polarity range: It can be used in a variety of solvents, from low to high polarity.
  • Good dispersion: It disperses well in the medium it’s added to, ensuring even distribution of the additive.
Properties:
  • Coatings: Improving sag resistance, film thickness, and leveling in paints and other coatings.
  • Inks: Providing proper viscosity and preventing pigment settling in printing inks.
  • Personal care products: Used as a thickening agent in various formulations, according to R.E. Carroll, Inc.
  • Other applications: Used in adhesives, sealants, and other formulations where rheological control is desired,
